West Valley Jewish Film Society
What is the West Valley Jewish Film Society?
Welcome to the West Valley Jewish Film Society, part of A Place For Films!
We watch great movies from around the world to learn more about Jews and Judaism, history, culture, values, meaning, and just to laugh.
Our goal is whether you've seen these films before or are watching them for the first time, you'll enjoy a richer experience when you exchange impressions and ideas they generate, and occasionally, learn more about them from the filmmakers and other guest speakers.
To join, sign up for our email list. You'll begin getting our news of coming attractions, including the film we're watching that current month. We’ll tell you how you can stream it at home at a time convenient to you. There’s no cost for membership, and most movies rent for a few dollars. Many are suitable for all ages, so you can often schedule a family movie evening with your children.
Sometimes, we’ll send you additional information on the films, or you may want to find out more for yourself on the Internet. Then on the third Thursday of the month at 7pm (unless it conflicts with a holiday), we get together on Zoom to talk about the filmand sometimes listen to special guests. And on occasion, we’ll have a special live program at HAMAKOM.
Our film society is open to anyone interested in Jewish films, whether they are HAMAKOM member or not, Jews or not, Southern California residents or not! So, if you know family and friends who might enjoy joining in, send them a link to this website and encourage them to sign up.
July Selection: "The Band's Visit"
Directed by Eran Kolirin
Film Discussion will be THURSDAY, July 18th, 7:00 PM on Zoom.
Streaming information:
The eight Egyptian musicians who comprise the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra arrive by mistake in a small town in Israel's Negev Desert. Their booking set for a different city, and with no transportation out of the town or any hotels to stay at, the band settles at a restaurant owned by Dina (Ronit Elkabetz), who offers them lodging. Overcoming ethnic barriers, the Egyptians find diversion and companionship with the Israelis through a pervading undercurrent of shared melancholy.
